Project Description
STRENGTHENING THE GOVERNANCE AND PLANNING FOR A MAJOR HERITAGE PROPERTY
> THE CONTEXT
Carrick Hill is one of South Australia’s most distinctive heritage properties, grounded in the history of prominent Adelaide family, the Haywards. Founding owners Sir Edward and Lady Ursula Hayward developed the property, comprising of 40 hectares of land with 26 hectares being native bushland, along with a considerable art collection for the home.
Prior to planned expansion of the precinct the board, with support from the SA Government, determined to review Carrick Hill’s governance and operations to ensure sustainable growth. The board also identified the need for some potential shifts in the business model with regards to commercial revenue and precinct expansion.
> THE BRIEF
Positive Solutions was engaged to carry out a governance review and facilitate a planning process for Carrick Hill. The purpose was to focus on ways in which the refurbishment of the House and the building of a new Pavilion could be leveraged to optimise future visitation and build long-term sustainability, as well as ensure that governance processes were aligned with best practice.
> OUR APPROACH
Positive Solutions undertook a review of current governance and planning documentation – Constitution, board papers, policies and other material, to assess their fitness for purpose. Two workshops were facilitated – one focused on governance, the other on forward planning for Carrick Hill. Advice was provided on setting goals and KPIs, and completing a diagnostic of the current business.
> THE RESULTS
Following completion of the second, planning workshop, the management and board of Carrick Hill proceeded with finalising a new strategic plan. Governance advice was translated into a timetabled action plan for the board.
